The original publisher's blue cloth remains remarkably bright, with the elaborate gilt tooling to the front board and spine retaining a crisp, unoxidised shine. There is minor wear to the extremities, most notably light rubbing and slight fraying to the spine head and tail, along with gently bumped corners. The blind-stamped panelling on the rear board remains sharp, and the binding is wonderfully tight and secure. All edges gilt remain brilliant. Internally, the pages present beautifully clean and bright, without any notable foxing or spotting. A handsome, well-preserved example of a delicate Victorian binding. In half vellum, with renewed blue end papers, and the original half-title preserved. Contains a frontispiece and all fifty-three other full-page ink illustrations by De Roussey. Contains a publisher's original advertisement leaf to the rear. Celebrating the beautiful illustrations of De Roussey as much as the lyrics of Anacreon, this lovely translation was inspired by the French artist's depiction of Anacreon's odes, particularly the Hellenic settings of the luxurious flowers and soft skies. With many of Anacreon's poems related to Cupid and romance, De Roussey's speciality for romanticism and eroticism are showcased.
