He was in charge of the first attempt to photograph a nuclear explosion on the Bikini atoll in 1946. He went on to command the first nuclear-powered task force in history, leading the aircraft carrier Enterprise. He served as president of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode island from 1966 to 1968, and after retiring from the military worked for General Dynamics as vice president for international programs.
