Moody joined a surveying outfit for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1865, became an Indian scout, spent a year among the Mormons in Utah while surveying [Flake "The Indians quite a few times sent me into camp with arrows hanging to my clothing and holes shot through my hat, but the closest they came to getting me was sending a bullet through one side of my boot - p.2." Includes an anecdote about meeting Mark Twain in Cheyenne in 1865-6, and Twain's financial acumen. Crudely illustrated with Moody's pen sketches.…

First edition. 116pp. Octavo [22 cm] 1/4 black cloth spine with tan and black pictorial stiff card boards. Very good condition. The stapled front hinge is a bit weak, but still holding. There is a minor loss from the cloth at the head of the spine. A bookseller's small label has been mounted to the recto of the rear cover. With the fold out map at p. 36. Flake 5456. Graff 2877.
