Edouard de Montule presents an epistolary account of his travels in New York, Philadelphia, St Domingo, and Jamaica, describing a journey up the Mississippi, visit to Niagara falls, and crossing to Canada.An excellent copy of this richly illustrated travelogue. Rebound in quarter morocco, with cloth covered boards and endpapers renewed. A touch of fading to back strip, otherwise in excellent condition externally. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned but generally clean and bright, with the odd spot. Very Good Indeed. book.

Montulé then journeyed up the Mississippi from New Orleans on the Vesuvius, the third steamboat to ply the river, on to Albany, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls, crossing into Canada. The plates, described by Howes as "highly interesting", depict a 'View of New York from the West', 'Skeleton of the Young Mammoth in the Museum of Philadelphia', 'View of the Isle of St. Thomas', 'Entrance of the Port of St. Domingo', 'Rencounter with a Rattle Snake, on the banks of the Ohio', and 'Part of the fall of Niagara, on the side of Canada'. The first French edition was published the same year in Paris in two volumes plus atlas. This is the first English edition and a translation of the portion of the work which relates to North America. It is of great interest, and describes the author's journey up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers by steamboat, "it has interesting sidelights of the fauna and flora of the areas he visited, descriptions of the islands of the West Indies and of the trade and commerce there, and the life of the settlers in those areas into which he ventured.
