Second edition (first cheap edition). 200pp. Edmund Crispin was the pseudonym of Robert Bruce Montgomery (1921-1978), an English crime writer and composer known for his Gervase Fen novels and for his musical scores for the early films in the Carry On series. He wrote his detective novels and two collections of short stories under the pseudonym Edmund Crispin, and nine novels featuring Oxford don Gervase Fenvolumes appeared between 1944 and 1953. Love Lies Bleeding was first published in 1948. Set in the post-war period in and around a public school in the vicinity of Stratford-upon-Avon, it is about the accidental discovery of old manuscripts which contain Shakespeare's long-lost play, Love's Labour's Won, and the subsequent hunt for those manuscripts, in the course of which several people are murdered. Collaborating with the local police, Oxford don Gervase Fen, a Professor of English who happens to be the guest of honour at the school's Speech Day, can solve the case at the same weekend. The book is bound in the original red boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with slight age-browning around the edges of the pages. There is no inscription. The dustwrapper had some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is slightly browned. The spine ends and corners are lightly bumped and nicked and the top of the spine and top front corner have been reinforced on the reverse with small strips of tape. Unfortunately the rear flap is missing. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
