In the publisher's original blue cloth, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Contains a frontispiece of M. Constant Montald's portrait of Jones. A prolific poet who has been compared with both Walt Whitman and Victor Hugo, Verharen was admired for his fresh lyricism and was nominated six times for the Nobel Prize for Literature. An art critic, many of Verharen's poems were inspired by paintings, particularly symbolist art of which he was a pioneer. In the publisher's original blue cloth, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart, with minimal edgewear and minor fading to spine. Grey dust wrapper is clean with minimal edgewear. A couple of smudge marks to rear wrapper and small residue from sticker to front wrapper. Offsetting blocks to free end paper hinges and a couple of faint spots. Internally, firmly bound. ''Natif de Bruxelles, il obtint une bourse de sa ville natale qui lui permit de venir s'établir à Paris? En 1886, il remporte le prix de Rome. Pendant une période, Montald semble avoir subi l'influence d'Eugène Grasset, qu'il combine avec celles des préraphaélites, élaborant un symbolisme précieux et un peu maniéré''. (in Osterwalder). ''Ce peintre avait fait partie en 1890 du cercle ''Pour l'Art'', animé par Delville, et destiné à régénérer l'art monumental. Dès 1896, il a participé aux Salons de ''L'Art idéaliste''. (in Bénézit). Le colophon stipule : ''Cette édition a été commencée en 1914 par les soins de l'éditeur d'art Deman de Bruxelles. Les originaux ont été dessinés par Constant Montald sur les indications du poète. Lors des événements tragiques qui ensanglantèrent la Belgique et la France, les cuivres furent cachés par des mains pieuses et soustraits à la réquisition allemande par le courageux éditeur, qui, épuisé, ne put parachever l'oeuvre chère à Verhaeren. La maison d'édition La Connaissance qui avait résolu d'éditer Le Cloître par respect pour la mémoire du chantre des Flandres, accepta le devis primitif de Deman, approuvé par le poète, et a réalisé l'oeuvre entreprise''. ''Drame - aux accents lyriques - de pensée, d'humanité, de psychologie, l'ouvrage de propose d'évoquer un couvent, image de la société, où luttent les forces héréditaires et les instincts nouveaux; entre mysticisme et science.
