Because the work in question claimed to be English poetry inspired by Greek poetry, Johnson replied: "We must try its effect as an English poem; that is the way to judge of the merit of a translation." Christopher Logue would like his readers to be influenced by Johnson's opinion.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Christopher Logue, CBE (23 Nov 1926 - 2 Dec 2011) was an English poet associated with the British Poetry Revival, and a pacifist. In 1958 he joined the first of the Aldermaston Marches, organised by the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War. He was on the Committee of 100. He served a month in jail for refusing to be bound over not to continue with the 17 Sep 1961 Parliament Square sit-down. He heard Bertrand Russell tell the Bow Street magistrate, "I came here to save your life. But, having heard what you have to say, I don't think the end justifies the means." In Drake Hall open prison he and fellow protesters were set to work - "Some wit allocated it" - demolishing a munitions factory. His last major work was a long-term project to render Homer's Iliad into a modernist idiom. This work is published in a number of small books, usually equating to two or three books of the original text. The volume, "Homer: War Music", was shortlisted for the 2002 International Griffin Poetry Prize.' (Wiki) ***A first printing of the first edition of "War Music", in near fine condition. The people of the United Kingdom have no defences if they are attacked, despite an annual "defence" budget of some £13,500, 000, 000. The governments of the United Kingdom and the United States are practically alone in placing the lives of their populations at such low priority. Seven million people in Peking can be safely underground in a fully equipped shelter system within seven minutes of an alarm. Switzerland aims to save every citizen. Norway has evacuation plans printed in each telephone directory. By contrast, the United Kingdom and the United States would lose the vast majority of their people. This book takes a critical look at Government civil defence policy and at those who say, against the scientific evidence, that it is not possible to survive a nuclear war. It urges that we must make preparations to protect civilians in case the peacekeepers fail. It contains essential information, with extensive, clear diagrams, which in the event of war will increase your chances of saving yourself and your family. It explains nuclear weapon effects, how to decide whether to evacuate or to take shelter at home, and what to do when a bomb explodes near by. It gives detailed instructions for building various kinds of shelters and how to equip them. It discusses the medical, sanitation, dietary and social problems that are likely to arise in the weeks and months following attack, and how to cope with them. You can survive a nuclear attack and, even though you may resent the fact that this book is needed, the information in it could save your life.' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***A first impression of the true first edition - an extremely uncommon book in near fine condition. Published during the height of the Cold War. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate.
