A scarce local history of the peaceful market town of Cheadle in Staffordshire, which was a manufacturing and agricultural center during the Industrial Revolution. A scarce local history of Cheadle in Staffordshire, written by local historian Robert Plant, with additional chapter of Croxden Abbey by British architect Charles Lynam and Cheadle Coalfields by W. Molyneux. Published by William Clemesha in 1881.In the publisher's original red cloth. Contains a frontispiece of Cheadle, a photographic plate of John Michael Blagg, to whom the book is dedicated, and a folding plate of a ground plan of Croxden Abbey. Collated complete.Despite the book claiming that the peaceful market town of Cheadle was not a scene of many historical incidents in themselves, it was still a center of manufacturing and agriculture during the height of the industrial revolution, and has a history dating back to Henry II. It is now most famous for 'Pugins' Gem', the recently built Catholic Church of St. Giles that remains a great example of Gothic architecture. In the publisher's original red cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with the odd small mark to boards, including two large marks to front board. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Fading to the spine, lighter to the extremities. Slight edge wear, with signs of rubbing to joints, heavier to front joint. Yellow end papers are generally bright and clean, with the occasional mark and browning towards hinges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.
