Il a notamment comme élève Moïse Kisling qu'il encourage à abandonner la sculpture au profit de la peinture. Il fait découvrir au jeune homme la peinture française et plus précisément Cézanne et Renoir. In 1906, Pankiewicz was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Notably, one of his pupils was Moïse Kisling whom he encouraged to abandon sculpture in favor of painting. He introduced the young man to French painting and more specifically Cézanne and Renoir. In 1910, on the advice of his mentor, Kisling aged nineteen years old left Poland for Paris where he quickly became a significant figure of Parisian artistic life. *.

Elle m'a apporté un peu d'arôme du pays." Moïse Kisling interroge son ami sur la pêche: ". elle ne doit pas être bonne en ce moment - nous allons vers novembre. Mais quelque fois la mer est bonne à cette époque. Parle-moi du poisson - quelle sacrée différence de ceux d'ici ! ah ! merde alors ! " et paraît peu enthousiaste à l'idée de se rendre aux Etats-Unis pour y exposer ses oeuvres, encore plus éloigné qu'il sera de sa Provence : "Quand je serai dans le pays de dollars et j'en gagnerai sûrement je te commanderai des longues chroniques sur beaucoup de pages. Tu seras obligé de me raconter tous les potins du pays et tu prendra comme collaboratrice Alice." Le peintre avoue un certain spleen lié à sa retraite : ". toi aussi tu me manque vieux - du coup je deviens sentimentale. Tu sais? Ici c'est la solitude complète et il faut se mettre à table pour écrire aux êtres que j'ai la bas pour s'oublier un peu. C'est pourquoi des lettres de gars comme toi quand je les reçois me font oublier pas mal de choses." Pliures inhérentes à la mise sous pli. Moïse Kisling (1895-1953) est un peintre franco-polonais, en Pologne, il a suivi les cours de Pankiewicz qui l'encouragea à partir pour la Fr…ance. Lors de la première guerre mondiale, il s'engagea dans la Légion étrangère, ce qui lui permit d'acquérir la nationalité française. Il s'installa à Paris et son atelier fut un lieu de rencontre, on y trouvait Modigliani, Derain (dont on ressent l'influence dans l'oeuvre de Kisling), et des écrivains comme Cocteau et Radiguet (in Bénézit). Paris 12 août 1916 | 6.30 x 8.60 cm | une feuille | Photographie originale prise par Jean Cocteau le 12 août 1916, représentant Manuel Ortiz de Zarate, Moïse Kisling, Max Jacob, Pablo Picasso et sa petite amie de l'époque, le mannequin Pâquerette, posant devant l'iconique café La Rotonde, boulevard du Montparn…asse à Paris. Tirage argentique d'époque, sans doute unique, provenant des archives personnelles de Jean Cocteau puis du fonds Maurice Sachs. Cette image a été publiée dans l'ouvrage de Billy Klüver intitulé A day with Picasso: twenty-four photographs by Jean Cocteau (1997). Klüver précise cependant qu'il n'a pas eu connaissance de la photographie originale et que le cliché illustrant son ouvrage est un tirage moderne d'après le négatif des archives Jean Cocteau. Nous n'avons trouvé aucun autre tirage original d'époque de cette photographie dans les collections publiques internationales. «Billy Klüver a rassemblé et commenté les vingt et une photographies prises par Jean Cocteau le 12 août 1916 à Montparnasse, tout près de cette intersection du boulevard Raspail et du boulevard du Montparnasse qui a été baptisée en 1994 place Pablo-Picasso. Elles nous conduisent du café La Rotonde, devant quoi un Picasso radieux en casquette parle avec Max Jacob dont la calvitie luit au soleil, derrière eux Henri-Pierre Roché en uniforme et Manuel Ortiz de Zarate, à une table à la terrasse du même café où Pablo est à côté de Pâquerette épanouie et du jeune peintre polonais Moïse Kisling. C'est Pâquerette, cheveux pris en bandeau, robe chic, la reine de la rencontre. [.] C'est la vie détendue de l'arrière. Pâquerette ou plutôt Emilienne Pâquerette Geslot est alors mannequin vedette du couturier [Paul] Poiret qui fait fureur. Un vrai film d'une journée de Picasso hors de son atelier.» (Pierre Daix, Picasso) Dans son ouvrage, Klüver s'interroge sur la présence, dans un Paris déserté par la guerre, de toutes ces sommités artistiques en devenir. La réponse est, selon lui, à chercher du côté du Salon d'Antin, exposition organisée par André Salmon en juillet 1916, à laquelle participent - à l'exception de Pâquerette - tous les protagonistes de notre photographie. C'est en outre à cette occasion que Picasso révèle au public ses Demoiselles d'Avignon. Cette rarissime image, réalisée par Jean Cocteau avec l'appareil Kodak de sa mère, immortalise un moment d'allégresse mettant en scène le tout-Montparnasse artistique de ce début de XXè siècle. However, Klüver states that he didn't know the original photograph and used a modern reprint from the negative in the Cocteau archives for his work. We have not found any other copy of our original photograph in international public collections. Billy Klüver has assembled and commented on the twenty-one photographs taken by Jean Cocteau on 12 August 1916 in Montparnasse, close to this intersection of the Boulevard Raspail and the Boulevard du Montparnasse, which was named Place Pablo-Picasso in 1994.
