Two posters with commemorative head and shoulders portraits of modern Chinese leaders in gilt oval frames, names and detailed captions about their historical significance below each, text in simplified Chinese characters, 77 x 52.4cm. Closed tears at two corners repaired with archival washi paper, some pin holes at corners, slightly faded, both posters in good condition. A set of two posters showing heroes of the revolution, both before and after the People's Republic of China was established. The poster with the title includes seventeen portraits of senior leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, including three who had been rehabilitated either in the late 1970s (Peng Dehuai and Tao Zhu) or in 1980 (Liu Shaoqi). Many such "commemorative rehabilitation" prints were issued by the People's Fine Arts Publishing Houses in the 1980s to visually correct the record by restoring purged leaders to the official line up, following the Cultural Revolution. The second poster in the set includes early revolutionary martyrs; intellectual founders, labour organisers and military or guerilla martyrs who didn't survive to see 1949, who were killed in the 1920s and up to the 1940s by the Kuomintang, Japanese invaders or warlords. The fact that Qu Qiubai is part of this pantheon indicates again that these posters were published after the 1980s "rehabilitation wave". A commemorative poster set such as this would have been hung in schools, work unit meeting rooms or Communist Party offices. …
