No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. By John Paton Kay (illustrator). A splendid engraved portrait, printed in circa 1837. Plate Size Approx 10 x 8 Ins, 25 x 20 Cms. Engraving size 4 x 3 Ins, 10 x 8 Cms. Mounted and ready to frame. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase an attractive and decorative engraved portrait.

Small 8vo, pp. viii, 86, with a number of small woodcuts; title page a little soiled with some light paper abrasion at upper margin, lightly browned throughout, particularly at margins; uncut in the original green pebble-grained cloth, with printed paper label on upper cover (somewhat soiled), and remains of paper label along spine, joints and head and tail of spine neatly repaired. First edition of this uncommon introduction to the fibrous structures in particular, by Alexander M'Nab, Jun 'Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, London'. According to the preface, Macnab has drawn upon more 'voluminous works', and hopes that his abridged compilation will provide a more accessible work for those 'unable to conveniently to peruse more elaborate productions'. The woodcuts are apparently by 'Mr Berryman', and although as far as we can tell, Macnab makes no direction citation from other works, he does refer to case histories as described by physicians both in England, Europe and America, including 'Dr. Kirkbride, resident physician of the Pennsylvania Hospital', (p. 22) 'Dr. Warren of Boston' (p. 23), Dupuytren (p. 23), Bichat (p. 56) Delpech (p. 65) and 'Mr. Hunter' (p. 62) as well as a number of cases highlighted in the Medical Gazette. Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A fine example of this very scarce pamphlet regarding the propagation and cultivation of cape heaths in the winter months. Vanishingly rare in the original wraps. In the original yellow wraps, which have retained their brightness. Rare, last seen at auction in 1989. And the last copy with the original wraps as here (but in not as good condition) sold for $890 in 1980. Illustrated, with a hand-coloured plate of Erica Aristata. Cape heaths are an African species of heather. The author, William M'Nab discusses caring for the plants during climates that have cold winter, E.g Scotland. William M'Nab was superintendent of the Royal Botanic garden, Edinburgh. He was also an associate of the Linnaean and medico-botanical societies of London. A very scarce, informative work, which looks at the soil best suited, propagation of heaths and their general treatment. In the original yellow wraps. Externally, in an excellent condition with just some minor handling marks to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with just the odd spots. Near Fine. book.

The author was Superintendent of the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh during and after the move from Leith Walk to Inverleith Row, and invented a machine for transporting fully grown trees. The scarce first edition of a short but important work by the superintendent of the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh, a post for which M?Nab had been headhunted from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Outside of Scotland Library Hub locates two copies of this edition (at Kew and RHS) and one copy of the 1831 second edition (BL); the NLS holds both while Aberdeen, St Andrews, and Edinburgh have firsts only and Glasgow a second only. Worldcat adds first editions in Harvard, NYPL and Botanical Garden, Guelph, and NLI, with the second in Wageningen, Delaware, and Yale.
