In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. A beautifully produced concertina-folding album (orihon) in its original gold cloth covered boards, subtly decorated with Japanese maple leaves, with illustrated red paper title panel to the front 18x25cm. This contains 13 original colour woodblock prints including the title page and prints consecutively numbered 1-12. Each measures 355x245mm, centre-folded, and captioned in red in English and Japanese. The covers are good only, fraying with some loss along the edges. The interiors are generally very good, yellowing slightly with some spotting, dusting to the title page especially, occasional creasing, and a couple of small dents to the surface of plate no. 9. This was issued to promote the Mitsukoshi department store. It had been founded as Echigo-ya in Tokyo in 1673, selling kimono door to door. Ten years later, it took the innovative approach of opening a shop that people could visit. It changed its name to Mitsui Gofuku in 1893, then to Mitsukoshi in 1904. Although no edition is stated, this was first issued c1893 captioned with the Mitsui name, then reissued in this form with the new name. The works are credited to the Meiji period Ukiyo-e artist Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908), who had been commissioned to prepare prints displaying Mitsui's / Mitsukoshi's fashions for each season. The title page features an open book with the main titles in Japanese, and a basket containing several flower varieties. Prints 1-12 feature very elegantly styled women and girls in seasonal dress, in diverse domestic or exterior settings in and around Tokyo. Of these, 2 are themed for Spring (1-2), 3 for Summer (3-5), 4 for Autumn (6-9), and 3 for Winter (10-12). They are captioned as follows: 1. Spring - 'Parting of school chums' // 2. Spring - 'An outing in a field' // 3. Summer - 'Keeping off cloth-moths' // 4. Summer - 'A cool breeze of evening' // 5. Summer - 'An evening blossom of Yakaiso (ball flower)' // 6. Autumn - 'Sketching out-door' // 7. Autumn - 'On a look out for a new season dress at Mitsukoshi Co.' // 8. Autumn - 'A walk to a country cottage' // 9. Autumn - 'A bright tint of maple foliage' // 10. Winter - 'A visit from a neighbor's petty favorite' // 11. Winter - 'A snowy morning' // 12. Winter - 'A walk with a pet dog'.
