Fremont's Pass is pointed out. Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1792-1868), the son of Scottish immigrants, was a prominent mapmaker in Philadelphia during the 1840s. Like Alvin Johnson, Mitchell was quick to embrace the technological innovation of lithography in his printing and established himself as the premier American map publisher of his generation.
