"Abby Conner was thrilled with the news that Aunt Ellen and Uncle John Watson were coming to pay a visit to the Conner claim in the Washington Territory. Especially since they were bringing their 15 year old son Jack! She thought if the Watson decided to settle in the Territory, she would be able to achieve her burning ambition to get away for a year of so at school. But like many deep laid lpans, hers seemed to go constantly astray. Jack stubbornly refused to get 'pitch in his hair' which would mean that he wished to stay in the territory. Even short trips to Olympia kept falling through because of the demands at home. A gay hoedown and halfbreed Henry's expeditions began to persuade Jack that the west coast was an exciting place to live, however, and Abby's discovery that she and Jack were not really cousins changed her outlook on the future."
