Sketches of the Country was one of the first works to provide an eyewitness account of the Napoleonic Wars, including scenic views of Portugal and Spain. Bradford was Chaplain to the British Army and his drawings chart the army's course through Portugal and Northern Spain before retreating to Corunna in January of 1809.
