Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1925. Xxxi, 223 pages. First Edition/First Printing. Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (titles along the spine are faded and worn, chip present to the front board). Bookplate present to the front pastedown. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Boris Pilniak's (Pilnyak) first book to be published in the English language. It is a collection of his earliest writing. This book was published only two years after his first novel was written in Russia, the censored 'The Naked Year' about the Russian Civil War. This would be a continued theme in the 1920's, with many of Pilniak's works being censored or causing a scandal in Russia. It would not end well for Pilniak as he was falsely accused of plotting to kill Stalin and in 1938 he was executed. It was perhaps his closeness to Pasternak, western writers, along with previous scandals and writing that sealed his fate. This collection of short stories were written by Pilniak, in the main, before his first novel was published. 'Death' and 'Over the Ravine' were written in 1918 with the remaining between 1920 and 1922.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Thus. First thus - newly translated into English by Reginald Merton. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and borders to the spine. The boards are quite clean but do show some marks and wear from handling over the last 98 years. The gilt titles are slightly faded. The head of the spine is rubbed and creased, with some fraying to the cloth and a small split at the top edge. Corners slightly creased but still sharp and not worn. The binding is square with no reading lean. Spine tight. The top edge of the page block is slightly dusty and darkened and there is a small light stain at the top of the fore-edge (not very noticeable). Light foxing also to the page block edges. Internally also very good, with just some light sporadic foxing and offsetting to the endpapers, and some light foxing spots to the first and last couple of pages. Interior pages otherwise clean, with no previous ownership inscriptions. The pages are generally clean, with no creases or tears. Paper stock lightly tanned but good quality paper used. No dustwrapper. ***225mm x 145mm. 247 pages. ***'Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (15 Oct 1814 - 27 July 1841) was a Russian Romantic writer, poet and painter, sometimes called "the poet of the Caucasus", the most important Russian poet after Alexander Pushkin's death in 1837 and the greatest figure in Russian Romanticism. His influence on Russian literature is felt in modern times, through his poetry, but also his prose, which founded the tradition of the Russian psychological novel. "A Hero of Our Time" is a novel by Mikhail Lermontov, written in 1839, published in 1840, and revised in 1841. It is an example of the superfluous man novel, noted for its compelling Byronic hero (or antihero) Pechorin and for the beautiful descriptions of the Caucasus. This is the first psychological fiction in the history of Russian literature. There are several English translations, including one by Vladimir Nabokov and Dmitri Nabokov in 1958.' (Wiki) ***A very good copy of this new translation of "A Hero of Our Time" by Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov. Uncommon in this edition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
