hardcover. Zustand: near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good(+). Miroslav Peterka (illustrator). First. Illustrated throughout with 52 well-printed photogravures by Miroslav Peterka, and text by noted Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, whose works were banned after the 1968 Soviet invasion. 96 pages. Tall slim 8vo, black cloth with green lettering, original d.w. Prague: Ceskoslovensky Spisovatel, 1967. First edition. Very minor fading to edges of cloth but interior is fine and clean, d.w. is lightly rubbed and with several tiny tears and chips at top edge. A near fine copy, complete in a very good(+) original dust wrapper. Quite scarce, and moreso as this copy is signed by Hrabal on title page. "Peterka details a familiar iconography of photographic melancholia - abstracted signs, mysterious doorways, peeling and crumbling walls, miserable-looking people on the streets, a broken mask lying by a lamp-post. With these apparent cliches, he creates an atmosphere of gloom and uncertainty, mirroring the alienated lives of modern man." -- Badger, The Photobook Vol II, p.222/223.

Very impressive and powerful photos from Prague by Miroslav Peterka with text by famous czech writer Bohumil Hrabal ("Closely Watched Trains, 1965, novel set in Czechoslovakia during the German Occupation). Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II, page 222/223. Hardcover in linen with dustjacket. 238 x 164 mm. 96 pages. 52 black-and-white photographs. Design by Oldrich Hlavsa. Condition: Linen outside and pages inside flawless. Dustjacket with light trace of use, but complete (professionally restaured); a bit yellowed (like always). Overall fantastic condition! Very scarce, especially with original dustjacket! "Peterka details a familiar iconography of photographic melancholia - abstracted signs, mysterious doorways, peeling and crumbling walls, miserable-looking people on the streets, a broken mask lying by a lamp-post. With these apparent clichés, he creates an atmosphere of gloom and uncertainty, mirroring the alienated lives of modern man. Generally, Peterka`s subtle, poetic cry of despair confirms the prevailing mood in a number of books in postwar Europe, where the blighted psychological mood remained long after the conflict had ended." (Gerry Badger) Bohumil Hrabel was an important Czech writer whose works were banned after the 1968 Soviet invasion. He is best known for Like Styrsky`s On The Needles of These Days. Miroslav Peterka`s photographs in this volume are bleak and melancholic, showing crumbling walls, shop fronts, signs, the citizens of Prague and a mask lying at the foot of a street lamp. The sequence ends with a picture of a wedding and then a baby entering a box, suggesting a ray of hope or mirroring the irony in the title.***************Ceskoslovensky Spisovatel, Prague. 1967.
