First edition, 4to, pp. vi, 186; a few illustrations in the text and 9 plates (6 printed in color); original blue cloth stamped in gilt on front cover and spine, some wear to extremities with spine ends and fore corners beginning to fray, linear scratches to covers, some spotting to the plates, and a few contemporary juvenile annotations in pencil. This copy inscribed and dated on front flyleaf, "To the Countess of Dalhousie, with the respectful esteem of the author. 1 July, 1887." Sponges, mollusks, starfish, and other examples of marine life found along the eastern coast of Scotland.
