These mainly brass or copper pieces generally bear the name and location of a public house and a value; some also record the landlord's name or refer to their use. First appearing in the 1830s, checks were widely used until around the turn of the century, with some remaining in use until about the time of the Second World War. Although now often called tokens, contemporary sources described them as checks, the term used in the catalogue. | The recorded pieces come largely from public collections, especially the Somerset County Museum in Taunton, the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath and the British Museum, with contributions from other museums and private collectors.
