A late-term mystery from the prolific Phoenix Press, whose whacky, sometimes so-bad-they're-great books were affectionately chronicled by Bill Pronzini in his "Gun in Cheek" surveys. Judging from the jacket blurb, this one likely doesn't disappoint: "The atmosphere didn't crackle with suspense. Nobody felt a shiver of apprehension. Rather, Flo Fenton laughed at the ludicrous sight of a 265-pound woman, in diamonds and a cotton sun-suit, standing precariously on a ladder and reaching for a ripe red tomato. A minute later, the ladder had broken and the 'Duchess' was dead. By some trick of memory, Flo's mind substituted for the scene before her another picture: herself as a young bride, a blood-smeared wedding dress, and a dead husband. Was there any connection? Was this, too, murder?" Phoenix Press published almost exclusively for the then-thriving rental-library market, in which most books were beat to hell and then discarded, resulting in their extreme scarcity today. Minna Bardon -- which may or may not have been a pseudonym; with Phoenix Press, it was hard to know -- is documented as the author of four mystery novels between 1937 and 1947, of which three were published by Phoenix, this being the last. NOTE again that this book bears a "Colorcopy" reproduction of the original dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.
