Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The atmosphere didn't crackle with suspense. Nobody felt a shiver of apprehension. Rather, Flo Fenton laughed at the ludicrous sight of a 265-pound woman, in diamonds and a cotton sunsuit, standing precariously on a ladder and reaching for a ripe tomato. . . . A minute later, the ladder had broken and the 'Duchess' was dead. . . .By some trick of memory, Flo's mind substituted for the scene before her another picture: herself as a young bride, a blood-smeared wedding dress, and a dead husband. Was there any connection Was this, too, murder Haunted by the past, horrified by the present, Flo found herself once more pursued by fear-and violent death.Blood-Red Death was published in 1947.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A blood-curdling mystery yarn, teeming with action and human interest, packed with thrills, and lifting the element of suspense to the nth degree. When a beautiful young woman was found brutally murdered in the advertising department of a great luxury store, a ghoulish Roman holiday began. A campaign was launched whereby the store might capitalize on whatever publicity the crime afforded. But the mills of justice began to grind swiftly, and bright taglines gave way to stark headlines which commanded: Who killed Mary Smith And who was responsible for the three violent deaths which followed Too many suspects, too many motives, innumerable clues, set the entire police force on edge. But the answer was found by the matchless Hank Bemis, who declared that when bigger mysteries were uncovered, he'd be the one to solve them. The Case of the Advertised Murder was published in 1939.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Murder follows murder in Mrs. Meyer's light housekeeping apartments. Eighteen-year-old Jane Robbins tells the story, aided by comments from Inspector Burke, who developed a fondness for Jane's coffee and a habit of using her as a ready listener-or is he just keeping an eye on a suspect Another resident of the building, a young reporter named Riley, discovers an interest in crime detection and his pretty neighbor simultaneously. After the last murder, a checkup of the clues and suspects reveals a knotty problem. Jane's kitchen experience may keep her out of the electric chair, but she might just end up as the killer's next target . . .

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Illustrated by (dj) Ancona (illustrator). First Edition. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a well-made "Colorcopy" reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing, and see Notes for further explanation) [good sound copy, modest wear to extremities, very slight fraying at a couple of tips, ex-rental library copy but marked as such only by a couple of small notations and a rubber-stamped shop name (Book Shop and Library, Rhodes Dept. Store, Seattle) on the front endpaper; a previous owner's initials plus date & place of purchase written in ink along the edge of the rear pastedown (concealed beneath the jacket flap)]. A late-term mystery from the prolific Phoenix Press, whose whacky, sometimes so-bad-they're-great books were affectionately chronicled by Bill Pronzini in his "Gun in Cheek" surveys. Judging from the jacket blurb, this one likely doesn't disappoint: "The atmosphere didn't crackle with suspense. Nobody felt a shiver of apprehension. Rather, Flo Fenton laughed at the ludicrous sight of a 265-pound woman, in diamonds and a cotton sun-suit, standing precariously on a ladder and reaching for a ripe red tomato. A minute later, the ladder had broken and the 'Duchess' was dead. By some trick of memory, Flo's mind substituted for the scene before her another picture: herself as a young bride, a blood-smeared wedding dress, and a dead husband. Was there any connection? Was this, too, murder?" Phoenix Press published almost exclusively for the then-thriving rental-library market, in which most books were beat to hell and then discarded, resulting in their extreme scarcity today. Minna Bardon -- which may or may not have been a pseudonym; with Phoenix Press, it was hard to know -- is documented as the author of four mystery novels between 1937 and 1947, of which three were published by Phoenix, this being the last. NOTE again that this book bears a "Colorcopy" reproduction of the original dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. (A "Colorcopy" jacket, as distinct from a facsimile jacket, is a color print of a raw (unrestored) scan of an original jacket, and therefore displays whatever flaws or blemishes were present on the original.).
