Zustand: Good. First Edition. Original submission drafts for two Edwardian romance novels with edgy premises: a reconciliation after an affair, and falling in love with a married man. ON PAROLE was published in 1900 by John Long. It's what we now call a "second-chance romance," where the plot revolves around a couple formerly in love. The heroine leaves her husband for another man, but ultimately reconciles with him. A contemporary review called it "a very lively novel" though noting "[w]e scarcely sympathise with the heroine, who runs away from her husband without much cause" (WESTMINSTER REVIEW). THE LITTLE COLONEL was published in 1902 by Sands & Co., who claim it "will specially recommend itself to young lady readers." In this novel, the heroine falls in love with a married man. A contemporary review says it "is not without literary merit, but its moral tone is deplorable" (LONDON QUARTERLY). A provocative group of primary materials from a little-known woman writer of romance novels at the turn of the century. Two sets of loose sheets, 13'' x 8'' each. Foolscap paper, autograph material written rectos only. ON PAROLE: 198 sheets; THE LITTLE COLONEL: [2], 470 sheets. Leaves toned and edgeworn, with slight smoke smell and foxing to first sheets.
