Aubin-Louis Millin (1759-1818) was conservateur des medailles de la bibliotheque imperiale in Paris. A member of many learned societies all over Europe, he was also connected to the society of physical sciences in Zurich which would explain the fact that his work was owned by Gaspar Schinz (presumably the painter Johann Caspar Schinz, 1797-1832 from Zurich). A German edition in 1820, and a new ed. in 1848, and a Nouvelle galerie in 1841 testify to the work's popularity. Aubin-Louis Millin de Grandmaison (né en juillet 1759 à Paris - mort le 14 août 1818 à Paris) est un naturaliste français mais surtout un « touche-à-tout ». Érudit dans de nombreux domaines, il s'intéresse à l'archéologie et à l'histoire de l'art médiéval et classique et fut un bibliothécaire renommé. En 1790, Aubin-Louis Millin présenta son oeuvre à l'assemblée constituante : Antiquités Nationales ou recueil de monuments, pour servir à l’Histoire générale et particulière de l’Empire François, tels que tombeaux, inscriptions, statues, vitraux, fresques, etc. ; tirés des abbaïes, monastères, châteaux et autres lieux devenus domaines nationaux. Présenté à l’Assemblée Nationale et accueilli favorablement par Elle, le 9 décembre 1790. Il fut le premier à parler, dans un lieu officiel, de « monument historique » à l'occasion de la démolition de la Bastille. Millin est emprisonné en 1793 en raison de sa lutte contre les Jacobins et sa rédaction de la Chronique de Paris. Après un an de prison, il part enseigner l'archéologie à la Bibliothèque nationale, à Paris, où il fut conservateur-professeur du département des antiquités. Il devient en 1799-1800 président du Conservatoire de la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Il fonde avec Pierre Marie Auguste Broussonet (1761-1807) et Louis-Augustin Bosc d'An. First edition of this large documentation of coins and medals minted during the era of Napoleon showing the major events of his career and thus illustrating his life and times. The supplement curatd by J. Millingen was published two years later and is often missing. Our copy has the complete text and all 74 plates. - Binding rubbed, corners bumped, spine rebacked using the old calf. First white endpaper with marginal cutout. Two plates are folding. Hardcover, uniformly bound in the original publishers orange-brown boards, dark brown gilt morocco lettering-piece to each spine; boards rubbed at extremities, paper over spines chipped in places, corners chafed, all due to the rather inferior quality of the publisher's binding. In a very good condition, fine and clean interiors with rather excellent sets of plates. ~ First edition. A remarkable production comprising of a total of 684 illustrations, fully collated for completeness. With the elegant bookplate of Cornelius Grinnell to first paste-down of each volume, possibly the father (1786-1830) of the famous Grinnell dynasty, whose descendants have created historical and commercial successes in Massachusetts and the United State. The first volume has a lovely citation, written in neat contemporary hand, dated London, 1820, which opens: "I cannot resist the opportunity of mentioning with gratitude, the pleasure I have derived, from the very elegant little manual, published a few years since in France, by Mons Millin, under the title of "Galerie Mythologique".
