Pencil signature of H. Chambers on title. A good copy only. Not in Glover & Greene; not in Topp; Hubin. p.292. Cover art depicts two men in a small…boat, one lying down and the other standing with a knife. A novel about a mysterious and criminal secret society divided into two parts: 'The Crime - 1875', and 'In Its Disguise - 1885.' From the introduction: 'It is characteristic of the egoism of modern society that, in its inherent aversion to the contemplation of anything calculated to disturb the even tenour [sic] of its existence, it should avert its eyes and complacently ignore the presence of threatening or dangerous objects as long as the threats of dangers affect its members individually and not collectively. In spite of revelations of late years, it is hard to convince the sober-minded, methodical, easy-going citizen that Secret Societies are anything more than the creations of an imaginative novelist's brain; harder still to awaken him to the realisation of the actual extent of their wide-spreading, poisonous growth.'.
