In den WarenkorbSet comprising two volumes of text, 8vo. 8½'' x 6'', and one volume atlas, large landscape 12¼'' x 17¾''. Recently rebound uniform matching first edition hard back binding in half speckled chestnut brown leather, raised bands, gilt lines, gilt title lettering and tools to the spines, hand sewn headbands, hand marbled sides and end papers. In 1800, Milbert embarked on Nicolas Baudin's voyage to Australia. During the voyage, Milbert and several other artists became ill, and the artists and the captain came into conflict. This caused several artists, including Milbert, to leave the voyage at Mauritius, leaving Charles-Alexandre Lesueur to produce the voyage's scientific drawings. Milbert returned to France, where in 1812 he published this series of views of Mauritius, the Cape Colony and Tenerife, comprising two octavo volumes of text, and one quarto volume of plates. Volume I xiv., 392 pp (+ 2 including errata). Volume II 390 pp (+ 1 Table) + 3 folded tables. The set we are offering has the atlas book of plates presented, not as quarto, but, very unusually as much larger landscape views. Atlas with uncut edges containing 45 tissue-guarded scenic views and fold-out maps. The fold-out plates consist of: cross section plate map N° 3 17'' x 21''., plate map N° 4 Port of Napoleon 17'' x 21''., plate map N° 5 Island of Mauritius 17'' x 21''., plate view N° 38 View of Port of Napoleon 21'' x 12''., plate view N° 39 View of Port of Napoleon 21'' x 12''. All housed in 19'' x 13½'' blue-grey felt lined clam shell box in Arbelave buckram, gilt titled to the front board. Age darkening to the end papers of the text books, some tissue guards are loose, the plates are clean and free from any tears or foxing but do have uneven uncut edges. Member of the P.B.F.A. MAURITIUS (Mascarenhas).

(rubbed, extremities worn, some scattered foxing, spine labels chipped, front hinge of Vol. I repaired); the atlas volume in contemporary quarter roan, gilt back (rubbed, a few marginal stains, 2 small marginal tears in 2 plates with tape staining on verso, some light foxing mainly to plate margins - plates 5 and 35 more heavily affected). First Edition of the Text; Later Issue of the Plates. The French naturalist, artist, geographer, and engineer Milbert spent eight years from 1815 to 1823 in the United States, exploring the eastern and southern parts of the country, sketching the countryside, studying the flora and fauna, and sending back some eight thousand specimens to the Museum of Natural History at Paris. The present work records his experiences and impressions of the picturesque scenery along the Hudson River. The plates, drawn on stone mostly after Milbert's own sketches, by Victor Adam, Louis Philippe Alphonse Bichebois, Isidore Laurent Deroy, François Joseph Dupressoir, Louis Julient Jacottet, A.Joly, Léon Sabatier, Jean Louis Tirpenne, and Louis Villeneuve, include views of Niagara Falls, Albany, Cohoes Falls, Sacketts Harbor, Boston, Providence, Passaic River, New York City, Troy, Saratoga Springs, Schylkill River, &c. "Milbert's lithographs.show him to be an artist of considerable competency, whose dexterous hand moved easily from landscape, riverscapes, and genre scenes to comprehensive topographical views.his account of contemporary life in [New York] leaves little unnoticed.his experiences in the new and rapidly developing eastern seaboard gave him a colorful view of American life.A tone of optimism and a fascination with young America pervade his travel memoirs." (Deák) "The powerful influence of the Voyages pittoresques on French topographical lithography is everywhere evident in these plates. Indeed, their scenic panoramas, falls, rapids, and striking rock formations are so relentlessly picturesque that the eye welcomes [the] occasional city views.". (Ray) There are copies of the atlas with proof plates on India paper (see Ray and Streeter). The present copy of the atlas seems to be some sort of later issue, the plates bearing the imprint of "Ligny Frères" rather than Ardit, Bove, and Gaugain as named as the lithographic printers in the copies described in Deák and Ray). The plates are also here arranged and numbered differently (from 1-39), and do not correspond to the numbering of the descriptions in the text. Brunet III 1713. Deák, Picturing America, 1497-1899, 299. Dow I pp. 156-57. Howes M-592 (calls for title, map & 54 plates, saying some copies have only 53 plates, assigning c and b ratings respectively). Ray, The Art Of The French Illustrated Book, 110 (proof plates). Sabin 48916 (54 plates). Streeter II 910 (atlas only: proof plates).
