Born in Hungary, Batuz was forced from his native country by the horrors of World War II and spent several years in refugee camps. After emigrating with his family to Argentina in 1949, the self-taught painter devoted himself to art and the study of philosophy. His home and studio at Villa Gesell, where he worked in isolation for several years, evertically became a vital focus of artistic and intellectual activity in Argentina. Settling in the United States in 1973 instigated a new stage in his development, a more intense and open realization of the possibilities of abstract art that has brought him worldwide attention.
