Through the book, the U.S.S.R. articulated its totalitarian ideologies and expressed its absolute power in an unprecedented way-through avant-garde writing and radical artistic design that was in full fl ower during the 1920s and '30s. No other country, nation, government or political system promoted itself more by attracting and employing acclaimed members of the avant-garde. Among them were writers like Semion Kirsanov, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Ilya Selvinsky, Sergei Tretyakov and Kornely Zelinsky; artistic designers like Gustav Klutsis, Valentina Kulagina, El Lissitzky, Sergei Senkin, Varvara Stepanova, Solomon Telingater and Nikolai Troshin; and photographers including Dmitry Debabov, Vladimir Griuntal, Boris Ignatovich, Alexander Khlebnikov, Yeleazar Langman, Alexander Rodchenko, Georgy Petrusov-not to mention many of the best printers and book binders. The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941 presents 160 of the moststunning and elaborately produced photobooks from this period and includes more than 400 additional reference illustrations. The book also provides short biographies of the photobook contributors, some of whom are presented here for the first time. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9783958290310. [Eindhoven], Van Abbemuseum, 2015. 89 pp. Num ills (chiefly col.). Orig. hardcover (boards). Large 8vo. This book published in conjunction with the exhibition, presented at the Library of the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 2 June - 25 September 2015. Compiled and edited by Serge-Aljosja Stommels and Albert Lemmens. Design by Mikhail Karasik. Text in English.- - The Russian artist Mikhail Karasik (born 1953) specialises in graphics, in particular, art books of lithographs. A series of graphic works was used as the starting point for this library exhibition, which he made in response to a manual on colour theory by Mikhail Matyushin, Spravotsjnik po tsvetoe (Reference on Color), which was published in 1932. These lithographs were supplemented with other manuals about colour by Josef Albers, Paul Schuitema and Jasper Johns, amongst others. In this way the exhibition provides a summary of the theme of colour in the twentieth-century history of art. All the works come from the LS collection and the library collection of the Van Abbemuseum.
