Genoa: Sileno, 1981-1985. Folios (ca. 50 × 35 cm). Original printed self-wrappers; [6, 6, 4; 4 ] pp. and 2 folded posters; [8] pp. and 1 poster with mounted color reproduction of a painting. Text pages featuring numerous reproductions of drawings, paintings, three-dimensional works, and photographs. All issues with the standard horizontal fold for mailing; very good. Complete run of this experimental journal, which dissolved the boundaries between individual artistic disciplines. It emerged from the journal "Ghen", of which only three issues were published between 1977 and 1979. During their respective periods of publication, both periodicals served as the official organ of the Arte Genetica (Genetic Art) movement, with centers in Lecce, Genoa, and Toronto. The movement was founded upon a theory of the emergence of language and art, according to which language derives from the mother's heartbeat, heard by the fetus as it develops in the womb. Language is therefore understood to be intrinsically bound to rhythm. Within this theoretical framework, art occupies a special position. It is conceived as a language of mourning arising from the separation of mother and child (on this and the following, see Francesco Aprile and Cristiano Caggiula, La parola intermediale: lineamenti di un itinerario pugliese, Lecce, 2017, p. 15). The group did not define itself through a specific understanding of form, a particular artistic medium, or a social or political agenda, but rather through this hypothesis. Accordingly, the forms and contents of the works produced between 1977 and 1985 were highly diverse. Experimentation took place across a wide range of media, including writing and visual poetry, architecture and installation art, concrete poetry, mail art, conceptual art, sound art and performance art, as well as theoretical work, documentation, and archival practice. The founder of the group, Francesco Saverio Dòdaro, established a research center bearing the initially enigmatic name 1.4.7.8. For librarians, however, this title is likely to appear less mysterious. According to the Dewey Decimal Classification, these numbers designate the subject fields of philosophy, linguistics, the arts, and literature. The project involved not only the artists associated with the Ghen group, but also university faculty and members of other artists' collectives. The theoretical framework of the "Ghen" group was shaped by poststructuralist thinkers such as Jacques Lacan and Jacques Derrida. The final issue, for example, includes a full-page contribution on Derrida's visit to Urbino on the occasion of the symposium "Decostruzione tra filosofia e letteratura" (Deconstruction between Philosophy and Literature). Another contributor to "Ghen Res Extensa Ligu" was Jean-Luc Nancy. Additional contributions were provided by, among others, Mirella Bandini, Peter Below, Luciano Caruso, Claudio Costa, Betty Danon, Franco Gelli, Antonio Massari, Steliomaria Martini, Fernando Miglietta, Pierre Restany, Carla Savio, and Franco Vaccari. As of June 2026, KVK, OCLC only show two holdings, both in Italy (possibly both the same set, held by MART).
