Leather. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Light brown half morocco. Six raised bands to spine; the second compartment bears the gilt title and author's name, while the others are richly decorated in gilt. Marbled boards, front and endpapers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). Edition in French. xxiii, [1], 263, [1] p., engraved frontispiece. Slightly bumped corners, foxing on some pages. Overall, a very good copy. The first French edition of this biography of Midhat Pasha (1822-1883), an Ottoman reformist politician written by his son, with a preface by ex-Minister of Marine, statesman and naturalist Jean Marie Antoine de Lanessan (1843-1919). Published in 1908, this book provides a comprehensive exploration of Midhat Pasha's pivotal role in the Ottoman Empire, chronicling his reformist initiatives, political struggles, exile, and eventual execution. Drawing on private documents and personal recollections, Ali Haydar Midhat Bey crafts a vivid account of his father's life and the turbulent socio-political climate of 19th-century Turkey. The biography highlights Midhat Pasha's efforts to modernize the Ottoman administration, his instrumental role in drafting the empire's first constitution, and his tenure as Grand Vizier. Additionally, it examines the fierce opposition he encountered, particularly from Sultan Abdul Hamid II, which ultimately led to his exile and controversial trial. Serving as both a heartfelt tribute and a valuable historical record, the book offers insight into the intricacies of Ottoman politics and the formidable challenges of enacting reform during this period. This book, which was first published in Ottoman Turkish in 1909, only after the declaration of the Constitutional Monarchy, was initially published in English in 1903, followed by a French edition in 1908.
