On the spine, title gilt to the second panel. With 24 aquatinted-engraved plates, of which 22 are hand-colored (one double-page, one folding) and 2 are black-and-white. "Grecian remains" was published over eight years, with the title page dated 1812. In the present example, the watermarks (J. Whatman) run from 1805 to 1818. This is a masterwork of aquatint-engraving, notable for the beauty and precision of its depictions of ancient Greek and Roman ruins in Italy. John Izard Middleton (1785-1849), a highly-regarded American Classical Archeologist, was born in South Carolina and educated at Cambridge University. He was the son of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, representing South Carolina. He spent much of his adult life travelling in France and Italy where, like many contemporary Grand Tourists, he sketched extensively. He traveled in Italy from 1808-1809, recording his observations and making sketches of the Magna Graecia, or the remains of Greek settlements in Italy. For his notes, he drew from ancient and modern sources, but considered his illustrations to provide the most accurate depictions of the sites. From the collection of William S. Reese (1955-2018), who was one of the great Americana booksellers. His firm continues to trade in New Haven. After his death, Christie's New York sold his private collection (24-25 May 2022; the present item was lot 295). Abbey, Travel 165.
