SIGNED COPYOF DAVID MIDDLETON, noted pioneer in the field of statistical communication theory. Middleton was also a collaborator of Nobel Prize winner J. H. Van Vleck. [AIP]. Interview of John H. Van Vleck by Charles Wiener, 1973, Niels Bohr Library & Archives, AIP. Abstract: Systematic methods are developed for determining best approximations to the theoretically ideal, optimum detector for signals in noise. The methods provide, for the first time, a basis for design approximations, and a means for comparing and evaluating actual systems with their ideal counterparts. Emphasis is on providing explicit detector structures and showing how, and to what degree, such structures yield optimum or nearoptimum results. Applications to radar, sonar, seismology, or any other signal detection in noise, are immediate. (Author).
