There is also a paper-clip mark to the dedication page & very light marks to the front endpaper & half-title. The top edges of the color plates are lightly stained & slightly rippled, probably from humidity. Good. First edition.The editors note that almost all the contents of the book are the work of men on active service with the Australian Imperial Force. Authorship is indicated by the writer's army number and initials.

These were issued by 216 Group, part of the Transport Command, headquartered at Cairo West during 1942-45. It compiled Air Route Books from loose sheets (maps, airfield profiles, notes etc) as…and when required, to help pilots execute specifically defined flights. Marked confidential, they were to be returned to the Briefing Officer on completion of the flight, or otherwise destroyed in the event of a forced landing in enemy or neutral territory. This set contains unused sheets that have not been hole-punched or bound. They include: (1) "Middle East - India Routes" June 1944, folding @40x28cm, showing two routes departing from Cairo West and meeting at Jiwani for the final leg to Mauripur. The southern route went via Sudan, Eritrea, Aden, South Arabia, and Oman. One has emblems bordering the Xmas message to the front (Palestine, BTE, PAIC, Cyreaica, Tripolitania, Sudan, Dodecanese, Aden, N. Levant), the other a map of the Middle East and North Africa with these emblems located on the map. The ms message inside each is exactly the same ("just a little Xmas Souvenir as it is the last which we will spend apart my Darling"), perhaps sending twice to increase the chances of it reaching its destination.

Spooner, Tony [Wing Commander Tony Spooner DSO DFC (1916 - 30 January 2002)] Adrian "Warby" Warburton, DSO* DFC** (10 March 1918 - 12 April 1944) was a Royal Air Force pilot and flying ace of the Second World War. He became legendary in the RAF for his role in the defence of Malta and was described by the then Air Officer Commanding in Chief Middle East, Air Marshal Sir Arthur Tedder, as 'the most important pilot in the RAF'. Years of speculation about Warburton's fate came to an end in 2002, when his remains were found with his aircraft, buried about 2 yards deep in a field near the Bavarian village… of Egling an der Paar, 34 miles west of Munich. According to witnesses, the aircraft fell there on 12 April 1944, around 11:45. One of the propellers had bullet holes in it, which suggests that Warburton had been shot down. Contains 222 pp with monochrome archive photographs throughout. Fine condition book in in near Fine condition dust wrapper with light rubbing across the spine ends, not price clipped. SIGNED by the author to the title page 'To Harry Kirk - who was also there (see next page) With best regards Tony Spooner | November 1987'. A unique signed copy to Harry Kirk, reference is being made to the RAF's defence of the strategically important defence of the Maltese Islands. There is a typed correction laid in by Kirk as follows 'I asked Warby if he ever saw a camel train' Tony altered it to read that I asked Warby 'What was a camel train' | pp 66 has another paper laid-in 'This should read that I asked Warby if he ever saw any camel trains on his trips along the African coast' Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection. Original printed wrappers. Perforated and handbound with…cords. Two air route books for pilots of the Royal Air Force flying from Cairo to Karachi during World War II, "designed to help [them] to execute flights vital to our fronts in all theatres of war. The information which [they] contain is therefore also of use to the enemy, and must be safeguarded at all times" (p. 1). - The books are in fact useful guides to airports along the way, the plans depicting airfields in Egypt (Cairo West, Almaza, Payne, Heliopolis, Lydda and Luxor), as well as in Bahrein, Sharjah, Jiwani, Karachi, Wadi Halfa, Khartoum, Sheikh Othman, Khormaksar, Riyan and other places. For each airfield general information like coordinates, the length of the runways, the nature of ground signals, existing hangars, repair and fuel facilities, expectable weather conditions, distances to other places, radio aids, and local currency, as well as timetables of morning and evening twilight are given. The folding plans show emergency airfields in Egypt, Palestine and Syria, Iraq, Persia, and the Arabian Gulf area, as well as the routes between the Middle East and India. - Further, the booklets include instructions on what to do after a forced landing in unknown territory, advising to ration water and attract attention of rescue aircraft through a spread-out parachute or fires, including the order: "Don't drink the compass alcohol". - There is no standard collation for the books, as they were added to with monthly supplements. With the handwritten note "Compiled 21.2.45" as well as a signature to inner covers. The "from" and "to" fields on the title-pages (i.e., the front covers) are filled out by the same hand. - Covers show some small creases and edge tears; a few small ruststains, but on the whole well-preserved specimens from wartime Royal Air Force use.

In den WarenkorbUnrecorded manual for military pilots of RAF Middle East, produced during the Italo-German North African campaign. We have traced no copies in OCLC or the National Archives. Established in 1917, RAF Middle East had responsibilities in Egypt, Sudan, Syria, and Transjordan, going under this name from 1922 to December 1941. Based i…n Cairo and at the Deversoir RAF base, its Air Publications Unit was in charge of the distribution of administrative forms and regulation manuals, as well as technical information, to the squadrons of the entire Middle East. In 1940-43, the Axis Powers led a campaign in North Africa, with action in Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, including two battles at El Alamein. This manual was produced for the use of "the aircrew" during a "major offensive" of the Bomber Command, "to gain some knowledge of the German Defence System" and its weaknesses. The chapters describe the German Warning System, which employed Freya and Würzburg radar; the operations of German night fighters; how to react after being intercepted; evasive manoeuvres (with two leaves of illustrative diagrams), such as the "corkscrew"; how to evade Flak (German air-strike guns), with mentions of "German flak shells captured in North Africa"; and pathfinder methods. Small quarto (190 x 150 mm). Diagrams to last two leaves. Typed and cyclostyled. Original wrappers, two brass fasteners. Contemporary inscription to front wrapper. Foxing to fore-edge and occasionally to margins of contents: a very good copy.

Lively report of an eventful flight taken by Sir Arnold Talbot Wilson (1884-1940), Civil Commissioner of Mesopotamia, aboard one of two RAF aircraft leaving Baghdad on 25 February 1919 bound for Cairo. Bad weather conditions and repeated engine trouble resulted in several emergency landing…s and delayed the journey, which Wilson eventually had to complete by train. - The first day of the trip involved heavy wind and a failing petrol pump causing the pilots Boyd, Nuttall and Lapraik to land and fix the pump near Tadmur before carrying on to Damascus, where they remained for three days of heavy rain. Upon continuing the journey on 28 February, one of the engines failed and the planes were forced to land in "difficult country". As repair seemed hopeless, Boyd decided to fly Wilson on to Ramleh and then return for Nuttall and Lapraik: "The taking off proved a difficult undertaking as the machine was firmly bogged, and the engine fall out would not move it. The Arabs however rendered enthusiastic assistance. About 200 of them surrounded the machine, and in spite of the fact that most of them pulled in different directions [.] after an hour's work and much shouting, succeeded in moving it to a comparatively firm piece of ground, from which it was possible to take off [.]". - When the aircraft got hopelessely bogged again near Tulkarm, Wilson continued his journey by train. In the meantime, Nuttall and Lapraik, who "were hospitably entertained by the Arabs", succeeded in a makeshift repair of the first plane's engine and picked up Boyd. The return flight to Baghdad with two substitute aircraft proved much smoother, involving only minor repairs and no emergency landings off the runway. The 500 mile distance between Damascus and Baghdad was completed in a non-stop flight of 4 hours 10 minutes "which probably constitutes a World's Record". - Slightly dampstained near right margins; a little foxed and creased. Traces of a rusty paper pin. A rare survival.
