1st Edition. Good. Some older reinforcements to centerfold and margins. Size 24.75 x 20 Inches. A scarce first edition example of John Thomson's 1817 map of the northeastern parts of the United States, including New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Rhode Island, and parts of adjacent Virginia, Canada, and the Great Lakes. There appears a large inset of Niagara Falls along the top border. Historical Context This map was engraved just 2 years after the end of the War of 1812 (1812 - 1815), a time when British interest in the United States was still running high. The map includes much of cartographic interest - including New York's Colonial Era Claims to southern Vermont. It also notes Maine as the 'District of Main'. At the time, it was still a dependency of Massachusetts - a situation that did not change until 1819, when the Massachusetts legislature separated it off, and 1820, when it became a state. The 'Connecticut Western Reserve' is noted in northeastern Ohio - this was a legacy territory granted to Connecticut by Royal Charter under King Charles II. Connecticut relinquished its claims to the Western Reserve to the Connecticut Land Company between 1796 and 1800. Nonetheless, the legacy of the Reserve remained, and it appeared on maps well into the 1820s. Publication History and Census This map was engraved by Nathaniel Rogers Hewitt for the 1817 first edition of John Thomson's New General Atlas . This map was discontinued in several subsequent editions but updated and reintroduced in the 1827 edition. Examples of this early edition are consequently quite scarce. References: OCLC 62277838.…

1st Edition. Good. Mended centerfold splitting. Uniformly toned; original wash color in a warm patina. Size 19 x 26 Inches. This is the Laurie and Whittle 1794 updated edition of Lewis Evans' foundational 1755 map of the middle part of the British Colonies in North America. Evans' map was the earliest to accurately detail the American frontier at the time of its original publication. It exhibits superb detail in the northern Appalachian Mountains and the Ohio River Valley, providing information about Native American tribes and transport, French and English forts, and other details pertinent to the frontiersman, including sources of salt, roads, and trails. It was hailed by Schwartz and Ehrenberg as 'the most ambitious performance of its kind undertaken in America up to that time.' So widely was the excellence of Evans' map recognized that he was unable to make any money on it at all, as it was promptly pirated by Jefferys, Sayer, Kitchen, Bowles, Crevecoeur, and, as here, Laurie and Whittle. This 1794 edition, at least, updates the map to indicate the outcome of the American Revolution - it names the United States and includes the boundary line between the United States and Canada as determined by the 1783 Treaty of Paris. This is also the first edition of the Evans map to include the new state of Kentucky - although erroneously positioned north of the Ohio River. Publication History and Census This edition of the Evans map - the only one to include post-Revolutionary War detail - was engraved in 1794 by London publishers Laurie and Whittle. It appeared in editions of Thomas Kitchin's New Universal Atlas . The atlas, and separate examples of the map, are well represented in institutional collections. References: OCLC 35065026.
