The Society's "NLSA" monogram centered in blue at the top above the text, "National Society of Literature and the Arts / This is to certify that Jean Dalrymple is a member of the… Society whose purposes are to recognize achievements in literature, music, and the fine arts, and to improve the condition of the creative arts in America". Dated January 1975. Signed in full "James A. Michener" below the society's golden seal. A list of the distinguished board of governors which includes Agnes de Mille, Andrew Wyeth, Leontyne Price, R. Buckminster Fuller, among others is printed at bottom left. Vertically folded in half with a small spot of the paper rubbed away on the verso. Very good. The American author James A. Michener (1907-1997) wrote over 40 books, many of which were popular fictional family sagas. Michener was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1948 for his novel "Tales of the South Pacific" which was adapted into a popular Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. His other works included "Hawaii", "The Drifters", "Centennial", "Alaska", "Texas", "The Bridges at Toko-ri". Michener condemned the Electoral College system in his much reprinted book "Presidential Lottery: The Reckless Gamble in Our Electoral System".
