Plastic binder. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. An 8"x10" binder featuring photocopied drawings and diagrams for the various sections of the Starship Enterprise from the movie Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). The binder is one of several put together by Lee Cole, head console designer, for cast members, to inform them and series writers about the redesigned spaceship. The binder covers Bridge layout, individual components of the Bridge, the Engine Room, the Briefing Room, the Transporter Room, Kirk's Quarters, the Medical Lab, the Examining Room, and the Sick Bay (bed monitor). There are five sections separated by tabs; each page within a section is protected by a clear page protector. Hal Michelson, credited as the production designer along with Joseph R. Jennings, was nominated for an Academy Award for his work, contributing to the interior and exterior deign of the refit USS Enterprise. Jennings, who worked as an art director for the original TV series, was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction. Most of the Bridge consoles, designed by Cole, remained from the scrapped television series. Cole worked on the motion picture production and was responsible for much of the visual artwork created. The bridge ceiling was redesigned, with Michelson taking structural inspiration from a jet engine fan. Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the first major Hollywood adaptation of a TV series that had been off the air for nearly a decade to retain its original cast. On March 28, 1978, Paramount assembled the largest press conference held at the studio since Cecil B. DeMille announced he was making The Ten Commandments. Lee Eisner announced that Academy Award-winning director Robert Wise would direct the film adaptation of the television series. Set construction began in July 1977. The fabrication was supervised by Joseph Jennings, an art director involved in the original television series A unique piece of film history. Fine condition.
