Assembled from the lectures of Robert Lowth at Oxford University, the volume provides an extensive literary analysis of ancient Hebrew verse, in 34 'praelectios', ranging in topics from "uses and design," to "figurative style," allegory, imagery, etc. Lowth's lectures are followed by Michaelis' "Poesi"- a series of 'epimetrons' commenting on most of Lowth's praelectios individually. Front board detached. Some age wear and staining on boards. Blind stamp of Hebrew Union College on free front endpaper. Very minor sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in poor, interior in very good condition. "De sacra poesi Hebraeorum" (Lectures on Hebrew Poetry) is an analysis and commentary on Hebrew poetry by Robert Lowth (1710-1787). Lowth was a Professor of poetry at Oxford from 1741-1750, in 1777 he was appointed Bishop of London by the Church of England. Johann David Michaelis (1717-1791) was a German theologian and orientalist. He also gave lectures on Hebrew language and grammar.…
