In 2013, the Museum of Contemporary Photography commissioned American photographer Michael Schmelling to make a new series of phot…ographs about music in his hometown of Chicago. First shown as the solo exhibition Your Blues in 2014 (curated by Karen Irvine), this ambitious body of work now takes form of an artist book, co-published by The Ice Plant and Skinnerboox. Schmelling spent eighteen months immersed in the project, crisscrossing Chicago alone at night, making his way into basement shows, crowded clubs, parties, and recording studios (?waiting in the dark for a communal experience with strangers,? as he describes it), documenting both the communal culture at large ? musicians and fans alike ? and the DIY individualism of the characters involved. Focussing on niche and local acts in unconventional venues, Schmelling's work reflects a vibrant, fluid crossover between the region's music genres, a diffuse legacy that encompasses the blues, punk, psychedelic jazz, rap, emo, hardcore, and house music. In Dreams eschews Hopper's iconic stand-alone images and…instead looks to distill the archive into a connected set of photographs that offer new impressions and stories. Hopper's photographic output was especially concentrated in the '60s, a period in which his film career had cooled off. During these years Hopper's primary creative outlet was his photography. The Nikon camera his wife Brooke Hayward gifted him hung so prominently around his neck that friends jokingly called him 'the tourist.' While In Dreams, which references Roy Orbison's song by the same name made famous in Blue Velvet, includes appearances by famous faces, they are intimately intertwined with Hopper's peripatetic life and his everyday use of the camera. Hopper was very much an insider - at ease with celebrities and artists of his day - but this new conversation with his archive shows that, like many photographers, Hopper was also distinctly an outsider. Famous himself, but also an observer: it's this unique duality that allowed Hopper to view the world in his unique way.

(we've never met, he lives in LA.) i had loved and coveted this saul leiter picture ever since i saw it at his gallery shortly before he died. i didn't think we could get it, but contacted leiter's estate anyway. they were great, gave us permission right away. the text i had written some time ago. and we were off. we will be printing soon, and i hope that friends with galleries and other spaces can carry the paper (it's printed on newsprint and folds up) and maybe a few bookstores. i'm not charging money for it, it's just my little gallery on wheels every month featuring photographers and artists (drawings look beautiful on this kind of paper, too) and with a little text by me or someone else (poetry, three sentences, a thousand words, a song lyric) on the other side of the image. that's the basic idea/thing. a little gallery on wheels with its own catalogue. you can send suggestions or people to me or Michael - who also is an excellent copy editor, i'm not - here for future issues. love, hilton."The first five issues of 'After Dark' were originally presented at White Columns as a part of 'Looking Back: The 11th White Columns Annual' curated by Anne Doran.
