First edition, the copy of historian and counterculture collector Rick Synchef, inscribed to him on the half-title and title page by a pantheon of counterculture greats: authors Michael Horowitz and Michael Aldrich, as well as Ram Dass, Paul Krassner, Wavy Gravy (Hugh Romney), Ralph Metzner, Stanley Mouse, and Mountain Girl (Carolyn Garcia). The signatures inscriptions are as follows: "This book will always be interesting, Mountain Girl [drawing of a heart]"; "Wavy G"; "Ralph Metzner 8/19/92"; "To Rick - whose collecting interests so parallel my own - from a co-author of this volume, Michael Horowitz"; "Rick - What a gas to see this book's 1st ed. again - later editions didn't even mention that we're the authors! Good collecting! Michael R. Aldrich"; "To Rick, who belongs in this book under the category of superhero Mystery Man! Paul Krassner"; "Rick, Namasté, Ram Dass", and with Stanley Mouse's signature incorporating a drawing of a mouse. High Times began life as a magazine in 1973. The Encyclopedia is presented as "the first comprehensive, authoritative and unbiased sourcebook and guide to all the so-called 'recreational drugs'". Quarto. Colour illustrations throughout. Original black laminate wrappers lettered and illustrated in colour. Spine and wrappers a little creased, laminate lifting at edges, a few marks to fore edge: a very good copy.…

A substantial document prepared by Michael Aldrich, head of LeMar International, for the 21st Congress of the United States National Student Association (USNSA), which from 1947-1978 functioned as the dominant national union of students in the U.S., responsible for an extensive variety of student organizing throughout its history. The contents, clearly aimed to educate, covered such topics as psychological dependence, the physical effects of marijuana, whether marijuana contributes to insanity, the commission of crimes, or leads to heroin usage, with discussion of the drugs' positive properties in comparison to alcohol usage. The document concludes with 34-point list of notes and sources, and a plug for both the LeMar Information Kit ($2.50) and back issues of The Marijuana Review. An uncommon survival, not separately listed in OCLC. 82020.…
