This copy gently ex-libris, with mild signs of having once belonged to an institution (somewhat faint serial number at the lower-spine, reasonable glue stains to the front pastedown and front free endpaper, small name tag at the ffep). Still though quite handsome. with clean chocolate boards and bright gilt-titling along the front panel and spine. First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Compliments of the author to Mr. & Mrs. W. P. English - Michael P. Mahon". This speculative study of folk and religious beliefs in Ireland before the arrival of Christianity is Mahon's most famous work and was used as a reference by James Joyce. Michael Patrick Mahon (d. 1925) attended St Jarlath's College during the time of Archbishop MacHale, who encouraged his study of Irish language and translations of the songs of Thomas Moore. Mahon emigrated to Boston and served 35 years in the archdiocese between 1890 and 1925. He wrote under the penname 'Gadelicus', for Boston's Pilot newspaper and in Irish for the New York journal An Gaodhal. Mahon had a scholarly interest in fairy-lore and covers the banshee, the Finn Cycle, the druids, the 'evil eye', and the ancient gods of the Irish. He pays particular attention to where ancient Irish beliefs appeared to have had modern echoes in the traditions, pisreógs, and festivals of his own time.
