In alternate years he gave a lecture course on one or the other of these periods in pre-modern science. Each year he directed a seminar on both of these ancient and medieval fields, the topics of which vary, in addition to an advanced seminar on medieval philosophy and science, and a seminar on the establishment of medieval Latin scientific texts. / Professor Murdoch was the author of Album of Science: Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Charles Scribner's Sons, 1984). His publications in medieval science, mathematics, and philosophy include an article in The Cultural Context of Medieval Learning (D. Reidel, 1973), edited with Edith Sylla, and numerous articles on the transmission of Euclid's Elements. The authors publish a previously unedited Regimen of Health attributed to Avenzoar (Ibn Zuhr), translated at Montpellier in 1299 in a collaboration between a Jewish philosopher and a Christian surgeon, the former translating the original Arabic into their shared Occitan vernacular, the latter translating that into Latin. They use manuscript evidence to argue that the text was produced in two stages, first a quite literal version, then a revision improved in style and in language adapted to contemporary European medicine. Such collaborative translations are well known, but the revelation of the inner workings of the translation process in this case is exceptional. A separate Hebrew translation by the philosopher (also edited here) gives independent evidence of the lost Arabic original. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book describes the medical world of the early fourteenth century through a study of the extensive archival material and contemporary writings which exist for eastern Spain in the decades before the Black Death. It describes the range of medical practice which then existed - a continuum ranging from scattered academic physicians to barbers and empirics - and gives evidence for the levels and numerical growth of these various occupations in early fourteenth-century communities (although it also emphasizes that occupational distinctions were not yet sharply drawn). The newly translated Greco-Arabic medical learning was beginning to spread through this continuum of practice, and the book argues that public enthusiasm for the new learned medicine led to the 'medicalization' of certain social and legal institutions, thus preparing a role for a medical profession in this society before its physicians had shown any consciousness of collective self-interest and identity.
