Broadside (252 x 360 mm). With half-page contemporary hand-coloured woodcut (244 x 178 mm). Fatherly virtues are portrayed allegorically in this rare sixteenth-century broadside: after the death of their own father, three brothers get to choose another, all making the wrong choice for different reasons. The worthy sentiments sit at odds with the roguish life of the author, Michael Lindner, who was executed in 1562 for murder during a tavern-brawl. Altogether, this piece serves as a testimony to the contradictions that made the late sixteenth century such a colourful period. - The top half of the page contains a hand-coloured woodcut, which is accompanied by a German text below. The first brother points to his choice for a father, a mighty ruler who can make him powerful and destroy his enemies: but the other brothers object that such a father could be too violent. The second brother chooses a man of the greatest nobility, whose title he can inherit; the other brothers counter that he would be too proud. The third brother opts for a wealthy burgher, who will be able to buy him influence and anything he could wish in the world; the other brothers worry he would be too greedy. - The figure of virtue lies on the floor at the brothers' feet with her sceptre fallen from her hand, to show that they have lost sight of the humility, benevolence, mildness and love that are the necessary attributes of a good father, and which in turn produce worthy children. - Not listed in Strauss, this rare piece can probably be attributed to Lindener's period in Augsburg between 1557 and 1562, where all of his listed broadsides were printed by David de Negker. - Born in Leipzig ca. 1520, Michael Lindener lived an itinerant and debauched life in southern Germany. Through publishing dedications of his works to prominent persons, as well as having forged writings by famous contemporaries (such as Savonarola and Melanchthon) printed on illicit presses, Lindener built a reputation as a learned man. Due to the amount of money he spent on women and wine, it was suspected that he had a well-to-do patron, through whose influence he eventually acquired a teaching post at the Benedictine Abbey of St Ulrich in Regensburg. Following a particularly violent tavern-brawl in 1562 he was executed for murder. His own way of life may make the virtues he depicts seem hollow, or perhaps all the more poignant. - An allegory of virtue from one of sixteenth-century Germany's most colourful rogues. Rare: Rare Book Hub lists only three items by Lindener on the market since 1966. - Horizontal crease in centre, a few very minor marginal tears, slightly browned, very minor spotting and smudging. For a broadside of the period in very good condition. - 1) From the library of the Apel family's estate in Ermlitz, 1771-1945. - 2) Nationalised and dispersed to public collections as a result of land-reform under the GDR, restored to the heirs in various phases in the years following 1989. - 3) Reiss & Sohn, 21-23 April 2026, lot 83. - NDB XIV, 597. Not in Strauss.…
