Hardcover. Zustand: Fine in Fine Archival Box. Limited Edition. Limited Edition. Hardcover. On April 30, 2016, Whitaker held a funeral service for the nearly 4000 African Americans murdered by lynching between 1882-1981 and denied their last rites. Recorded here is the order of service and the eulogy together with separate obituaries and engraved portraits of six individuals. "Ashes to ashes is the inaugural enterprise of SAW Press, published in 2018. Shirley Ann Whitaker created the copperplate portraits. She wrote the eulogies for a 2016 service at the historic St. John's Congregational Church in Springfield, Massachusetts. These six testimonials of documented lynchings were dramatized to represent thousands of souls that were lost to lynching in the United States of America. Michael Kuch assisted with the book project and its design and printed the etchings at the Double Elephant Press in Northampton, Massachusetts. The type is Bell, which was cast by Michael and Winifred Bixler in Skaneateles, New York. Art Larson printed the letterpress in Hadley Masachusetts. The gray paper was made by Katie MacGregor in Whiting, Maine. Mark Tomlinson has bound the edition of fifty in Easthampton, Massachusetts. Copies one through seven have covers with a leather painting by artist Winfred Rembert, a lynching survivor." [Colophon] Shirley Ann Whitaker created the images. Michael Kuch assisted with the design of the broadside & printed the intaglio edition. The letterpress is by Art Larson. Katie MacGregor made the paper. The polymer plate is by Boxcar Press. Mark Tuchman laid out the Bell digital type. The list of names was compiled by Amy Bailey, Stewart Tolnay & E.M. Beck." [Broadside colophon] Broadside consists of a list of names of victims of lynching and housed in gray paper sleeve, with text: "As long as you speak my name I will live forever." A powerful testimonial created a student of Leonard Baskin and renowned community activist, doctor, and artist. Tight, bright, and unmarred; box tight and unmarred. Gray paper board, silver gilt lettering; gray cloth archival box with printed paper spine label. 8vo. np. Illus. (color and b/w plates). Laid in portfolio with printed broadside. BOX 1: A fine copy of the book in a red flax chemise with ivory ankh closure in a fitted tray; also laid in are: -Operating Instructions, a large Key to the Wood Type, and the 10x29 inch broadside prospectus. -Two original engraved woodblocks (1 cherry, 1 walnut) with the image of the head of a Sphinx, a tree, shell, and parachute. -Original watercolor of a sphinx matching the image on the blocks. Signed and dated by Kuch. -An extra suite of 13 full-page images in the book, each signed by Kuch and numbered II/XV, in parchment folder. -15 proofs of wood type and images, several double page, and one quad-fold state of the prospectus, some with penciled notations, in parchment folder. BOX 2: Three wood blocks (the four pillars which created the '4' in 2004 and two versions of the sphinx; an additional copy of the prospectus; more than 170 state proofs in a parchment folder. During this period, Kuch created all his illustrations first as water colors, before his engravings or etchings. The chiaroscuro woodcuts in Sphinx were cut in cherry blocks and then offset onto walnut wood (chosen for its open grain to produce a linear element). The walnut blocks were cut to create the backgrounds. A marvelously inventive, colorful, exuberant work. The book opens with double spreads depicting the answer to a familiar riddle, to which the reader is invited to guess the question. Others reveal geometry most likely used to construct the great pyramids. Illustration on p[19] has three flaps that open to reveal letters that change as the paper wheel within the double leaf is turned. The text, impeccably printed by Art Larson, is set in 19th century wood type from his collection. [Book, Art, Object page 154]. Tight, bright, and unmarred. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine in Fine Archival Box. Limited Edition. Limited Edition. Hardcover. "Marking twenty years of the Double Elephant Press Michael Kuch is publishing ILLUMINATIONS ?? AN ACROSTIC MARTYROLOGY. Modeled after an illuminated manuscript, it contains mezzotints of invented martyrs with marginalia of illuminated relief-etchings. The work revolves around thirteen images of imaginary icons who are martyred by their own enlightenment. One is Impaled by shafts of ineluctable light, and another, Lifted to glory by the stones of critics. These images are mezzotints with further etching -- hence Kuch is calling them "mezzo e mezzotints." In the manner of an illuminated manuscript, the thirteen martyrs are surrounded by tangential marginalia. This decorative imagery predominantly reference post-enlightenment science. The marginalia and text are composed of nearly 100 small relief etchings a la Blake. These are hand water colored by Kuch using hand-made watercolors from Kramer pigments. The marginalia and text appear on the page preceding each mezzo e mezzotint martyr with a window cut in it. This allows for viewing of the martyr with the colorful marginalia as well as on its own in stark black and white when the page is turned." (artist statement). Tight, bright, and unmarred. Open spine binding, brass edges, printed paper boards, cutthrough elements; matching dropspine case. Small 4to. np. Illus. (color and b/w plates). Numbered limited edition. Signed by the artist.
