His parents were great influences on his career, his father encouraging him greatly to succeed his mother introducing him to the mystery novel genre. Connelly would enter into the journalism world in 1980, beginning in the Daytona Beach News-Journal before moving to the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel where he covered the cocaine wars from 1981-1986. After earning a Pulitzer Prize in 1985, Connelly would move to Los Angeles to work as a crime reporter. It was during his time in LA Connelly began work on his first published novel; "The Black Echo".
