Transmis par un manuscrit unique (Paris, BnF, latin 16663), il se presente comme une encyclopedie des connaissances musicales a la fin du XIIIe siecle, peut-etre la plus complete. En vingt-huit chapitres, l'auteur synthetise les connaissances recues dans l'Universite de Paris, reposant largement sur Boece, Gui d'Arezzo et Jean d'Afflighem. Il livre enfin l'etat de la reflexion contemporaine sur la composition et les notations polyphoniques de la seconde moitie du XIIIe siecle (Jean de Garlande, Francon de Cologne et Pierre le Picard). L'unique manuscrit qui transmet cette somme se compose de 94 feuillets d'un format moyen, a l'ecriture irreguliere et assez malhabile.
