This map, made by geographer Hermann von Wissmann (1895-1979), was the first map ever made of the region that was based on measurements and surveying.Daniël van der Meulen (1894-1989)…, an Arabist and consul at Jeddah, was one of the first Westerners to visit Hadhramaut. This work, complete with numerous photographs and illustrations, relates his journey and offers a fascinating insight into the political, social and economic situation of this region in the 1930s. With two owner's inscriptions on the first flyleaf ("Amersfoort, 5 dec. 1932" and "A. groothoff"). Without the dust-jacket. The spine and part of the back board have faded, the top edge of the back board is slightly bumped. The endpapers, french title-page and page 248 have browned edges, foxed throughout. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of a rare work describing the second journey of Dutch Arabist, diplomat and photographer Daniël van der Meulen (1894-1989) to Hadhramaut, a region in the southeast of the Arabian peninsula. He was one of the first Westerners to visit this region. He travelled through Hadhramaut for the first time in 1931 and publis…hed a work about his experiences, called Hadramaut, some of its mysteries unveiled (1932). However, he only succeeded in crossing the mountains between Aden, an important port city in Yemen, and Hadhramaut on his second expedition in 1939. The present works relates his experiences during this journey, complete with 91 black-and-white photographic illustrations of the region and its inhabitants during the 1930s.In 1939, the Hadhramaut region had just become part of the Aden Protectorate, a British protectorate formed after the conquest of Aden by the Bombay presidency of British India in January 1939. Since van der Meulen had already been to Hadhramaut before, he was able to compare the situation in the region before and during British intervention. The present work, therefore, offers a fascinating insight into the effects of the British colonial administraton in Hadhramaut.With two owner's inscription on the first flyleaf ("Amst. 1 mei 1948" and A. groothoff"), four Dutch newspaper clippings about Aden and Hadhramaut from 1939 and 1952, and annotations in Dutch on page XII and page 242, about the Dutch edition of this work. In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, scarce with the dust jacket in any condition, of this record of a 1931 expedition by Daniel van der Meulen (1894-1989), the Dutch charge d'affaires in Jeddha, in the company of Dr Hermann von Wissman (1895-1979) of Nanjing University. Their journey marked the beginning of a period of intensive Euro…pean exploration of the Hadhramaut; few accounts come with such plentiful illustration. The cartographic adornments are all the handiwork of von Wissman. His extraordinarily detailed map of the Hadhramaut in the rear pocket anticipates his later map of Southern Arabia, published by the Royal Geographical Society in 1957 and 1958, which uses data gathered both on the 1931 expedition and when he returned to the region with van der Meulen in 1939. Octavo. Folding route map frontispiece, 68 half-tone plates, large folding map tucked in rear cloth band, illustrations in text. Original dark blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt, front cover panelled in blind, buff endpapers. With dust jacket. Cloth lightly soiled and rubbed, pages facing free endpapers browned as usual, maps lightly foxed and creased; dust jacket flaps without price as issued, loss to middle third of front flap, nicks and chips, old tape repairs on verso including to tear running length of spine panel, front panel skimmed: a near-fine copy in the fragile jacket.
