Handschriftlicher Brief ihres Ehemanns an das Ehepaar Fred & Evelyn Plaut, datiert auf den 1.4.1960. + + + Eva Metman, who passed away on December 1st, 1959, at the age of 64, was a key founding member of the London Society of Analytical Psychology, and her loss marks the departure of another influential figure from the society. Though perhaps lesser known today, Metman's early years were marked by a promising career in theatre. As a young actress, she played leading roles, including Rautendelein in Hauptmann's Die Versunkene Glocke. Trained and mentored by Max Reinhardt, one of the foremost theatrical figures of the time, she earned his admiration for her talent. In addition to her acting career, Metman founded two theatres: Die Tribüne in Berlin, which continues to operate today, and another in Munich. Her deep understanding of theatre was evident when she delivered her 1958 paper, "Reflections on Samuel Beckett's Plays," to the Analytical Psychology Club. The essay, coupled with her vivid and compelling presentation, showcased not only her grasp of dramatic technique but also a glimpse into the rich theatrical life she had once led.It was only after moving to Great Britain in 1936 that Metman turned her attention to the field of analytical psychology. This shift was influenced by her relationship with Philip Metman and the high regard in which she was held by Dr. H. G. Baynes, whose belief in her abilities helped guide her transition into this new career. Metman's greatest legacy lies in her work as an analyst, where her personal warmth, loyalty, and intellectual depth left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her seminars were beloved by students, who appreciated not only her knowledge but also her candid and supportive feedback. In addition to the posthumous paper published in this Journal, Metman wrote three other notable papers, all published by the Guild of Pastoral Psychology. Her interest in the Guild stemmed from her long-standing engagement with theosophy and occultism, evolving into a keen interest in the psychology of religion, particularly as explored by Carl Jung. (PEP) / JUNG (1951, Coll. Wks., p. 121) speaks of a class of schizophrenic and neurotic patients whose illness "seems to lie in their having something above the aver- age, an overplus for which there is no adequate outlet". And he continues: "We may then expect the patient to be consciously or in most cases-un- consciously critical of the generally accepted views and ideas." The impression one gains in such cases is that there is somehow more wisdom in their madness than in the kind of sanity in which the majority feels safe. These patients do not find their feet in the world unless they succeed in integrating those notions which can form the nucleus of adequate self-expression. As long as they have not reached this point, they tend to vacillate between moods of inflated rebellion and of deep despair and sense of failure. Their disorientation seems to be an unconscious compensation for what has been described as a contemporary threat to the uniqueness of the individual. This threat of collectivization has been called the illness of our epoch. In a letter to the critic George Jean Nathan, Eugene O'Neill says that the dramatist of today has to reveal the root of the sickness of our time. This root of sickness he describes as "the death of the old god and the incapacity of science and materialism to give a new god to the still living religious in- stinct". The dramatist's task, he continues, is "to find a new meaning of life" with which to allay man's fear of death (Mellinger, 1950). (from the Introduction, Reflections on Samuel Beckett's Plays.)
