First Edition. 16mo (15cm). Embossed cloth wrappers, titled in gilt on front cover; 72pp. Old cloth tape reinforcement at bound edge; soil to wrappers, with small chip at lower fore edge of front cover; internally complete and clean. A Good, sound copy. A detailed account, by a local resident and community leader, of the massive Middlesex County tornado of August, 1851, which caused extensive damage to several towns surrounding Boston including Waltham, Arlington, and Cambridge. Rev. Brooks' description of the extent and path of the damage is both personal - mentioning by name the individuals most affected by the disaster, praising their kindhearted neighbors for their willingness to render aid - and scientific, including a systematic investigation of the effects of the twister on various tree species, and the patterns formed by the direction of their fall. Following Brooks' text are numerous reports from the individual municipalities precisely locating damaged properties, together with estimates of the dollar value of damage to individual landowners. A fascinating little book by a man who clearly embodied the spirit of the Victorian naturalist-polymath.

In den WarenkorbFive posters (each c.745 x 525mm) in their original brown manila envelope (282 x 205mm); each poster with 614 colour illustrations reproduced from paintings, text in a mix of simplified and traditional Chinese characters, envelope with title and publisher printed in red; folds to posters and a few other, minor creases, wear to edges of envelope, else in excellent condition. An apparently unrecorded set of posters from mid-1960s China instructing peasants in basic meteorology. Illustrated by the well-known socialist realist artist Zhao Jingdong, the posters explain the basic concepts of the science and how to predict the weather, particularly rain. The five posters cover, in turn: how to forecast the weather by observing clouds; proverbs about the weather and their validity; visible phenomena, in particular the behaviour of animals and how it relates to the weather; how to measure rainfall and soil moisture; and wind direction and the Beaufort scale. The text is in layman's terms, making extensive use of mnemonics and rhymes, and was evidently written with a rural audience in mind. Posters such as these were likely produced for travelling officials to put up in village meeting halls, perhaps to accompany a talk. Few have been preserved, particularly in such condition and with the envelope with which they were issued. The imprint describes the present set as the 'second impression' but we have found no other copies, of any impression, elsewhere. Language: Chinese.

Very good. Closed margin tear professionally repaired on verso. Size 16 x 10.75 Inches. This is one of thematic world map sets from the 1863 edition of Johnson and Ward's New Illustrated Family Atlas . Featuring two maps within a single border, the upper map depicts the world's meteorological patterns and the lower map displays the distributions of important commercial plants around the globe, while focusing on the major cash crops of the time: coffee, tobacco, and cotton. The whole is decorated with the fretwork border common to Johnson's atlas work from 1863 to 1869. The Meteorology Map The upper map uses color to highlight different zones, with particular emphasis on wind conditions. Continents and some countries are labeled, along with islands in the Pacific. Ice barriers are noted in the Arctic. An inset along the bottom border illustrates the rainfall characteristics of different regions, including those that are 'rainless'. The Plant Map Johnson uses color to highlight the continents. He employs lines (much like the lines used to illustrate winds in the upper map) to mark the 'limit of cultivation' of different crops. Bars illustrate the range of cultivation for other crops, portraying wide swaths of the world as capable of growing these plants. Publication History This map was printed by Johnson and Ward as plate nos. 13-14 in the 1863 Civil War edition of Johnson's Family Atlas . References: Rumsey 2905.005 (1860 edition). Phillips (Atlases) 6140.8-9.
