In den WarenkorbNew York, "Published by Samuel Wood, No.357, Pearl Street, Pinted by Joseph Rakestraw, Philadelphia", 1814, (8) pag. as a fold-out in four sections, title with woodcut vignette within ornamental border, backwrapper with vignette of a sailing vessel, illustrated with 8 more woodcuts signed by J. Poupard - the single sheet is folded to produce a four-panelled flap-book, each of the four leaves may be folded-out at the top and bottom to reveal four possible other (metamorphic) pictures per leaf, self-wrapping, 15 x 10 cm./ folding out to 29 x 37 cm. = Scarce transformation-book, published at a time when children's literature was still almost entirely moral and instructional in content, these earliest movable books helped usher in an era of more entertaining literary fare. Author or creator identified as Benjamin Sands in the ornamental running border made up of the alphabet and numerals intended for use as a guide for sewing samplers. The panels have short printed poems on a moral theme, the final a skeleton exclaiming "O Man! now see thou art but dust (.)". This chapbook was first published in 1787 and went through 40 or so editions, but is rare in any condition as it was designed to be folded and unfolded in use and is usually found - if preserved at all - in a frail state. Our copy has been lightly restored: some loose folding flaps have been reattached and there is the inevitable llight foxing or toning; the central fold has some minor loss.
