A Post Obit Bond, is a bond given by a borrower, payable after the death of a specified person, especially one given to a moneylender by an expectant heir promising to repay when his or her interest falls into possession. In this case the bond was offered by auction on the open market, the debtor being expectant of an income of £4,000 a year on the decease of his father. It was unusual for a bond to be offered in this way, they were more commonly transferred in more discreet transactions between bankers, moneylenders and speculators, and occasionally to gain some advantage over the debtor.
