In den WarenkorbZustand: Near Fine. 1953. Cresta Silks. 1953. Printed pale-pink silk scarf with applied gold decoration. Supplied with April 1953 issue of 'British Vogue'. English. 870x870mm. 0.2kg. Near fine; a remarkably well-preserved example with the gold decoration remaining bright and fresh; a couple of very small spots, a small faint mark to left margin. A scarf designed by Oliver Messel to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, heightened with real gold. The printed silk scarf was made by Cresta Silks as a commemorative item for the 1953 royal event. Tom Heron of Cresta travelled to Switzerland to oversee the printing of the scarf and the pioneering technique that allowed real gold to be applied to the surface. The pale-pink ground is printed with a design of a horse and carriage (the Gold State Coach) surrounded by a frame of floral and natural elements. The border contains the Queen's cypher, the emblems of the four nations and a spray of oak, picked out in pinks and greens. The whole is highlighted with gold decoration. It is signed within the design by Messel. The design carries Messel's sense of theatricality with rococo, romantic elements. The young queen and her horse and carriage are held within a sparkling fairytale setting. The scarf was so fashionable it featured on the pinked-hue cover of the April 1953 issue of British Vogue. The magazine indicates that the scarf was created in a 'Pink Champagne' colour, was available for 5 guineas at Hartnell and Fortnum & Mason, and is 'the first scarf to glitter with authentic gold, by means of a new process, which will wash, clean and press.' Tom Heron is quoted in Peart-Binns & Heron's biography as telling shop staff, 'I tell you in confidence that the Queen, the Queen Mother, the Duchess of Kent and Princess Margaret have all accepted scarves, and said very nice things about them too!' The design was also printed on a pale-green background. The scarf was re-issued in 1977 for the Queen's Silver Jubilee, printed on a silver-grey ground and heightened with applied silver, rather than gold. Examples of the original Coronation gold scarf are very scarce, especially in the desirable "Champagne Pink" colour. [Castle, Charles. 'Oliver Messel. A Biography'. 1986. p.156; 'British Vogue'. In excess of 450 words. Circa 1948; no date given. The letter is remonstrating about an intervention by 'Tony' Quayle to Binky Beaumont appearing to criticise the production design for 'The Lady's Not For Burning'; mention is made of Pamela Brown's red dress, the composition and colours: "The whole production was in its way something that meant more to me than anything that I have done for the theatre." The letter goes into delicious detail about the actress's insistence on her own preferences for costume "making the whole thing a mess and an anticlimax. Pamela's appearance was I regret to say a great disappointment to me. She seems perfectly confident that she knows best & there seems nothing further that I can do except not to upset myself by looking at it."/The 1949 production at the Globe Theatre, London (now the Gielgud Theatre) Director: John Gielgud.
