Edition originale peu courante. Ernest-Urbain-Antoine Mesnet (1825-1898), fut interne des hôpitaux de Paris (notamment dans le service de Briquet) puis médecin des Hôpitaux de Paris, avant de s'installer à Angers, sa ville natale. Il fut membre de l'Académie de Médecine. Il rapporte ici les résultats de ses études portant sur un homme de 39 ans, prénommé Laurent, vivant à l'écart de la civilisation, au sein d'une forêt varoise. La gravure représente ce "sauvage du Var" dans sa hutte. Une commission constituée de Baillarger, Tardieu et Cerise fut chargée d'étudier ce mémoire. Le rapporteur, Cerise, écrit notamment : "Laurent est un membre de ces types difficiles à classer, où l'idée dominante, exempte d'hallucination et de délire, semble osciller entre l'aliénation, l'utopie et l'excentricité, pour s'arrêter définitivement dans celle-ci. C'est surtout pour le bonheur incomparable dont il jouit dans sa misère systématique et volontaire que Laurent est digne de l'étude à la fois judicieuse et délicate que M. le docteur Mesnet, observateur compétent, a communiqué à l'Académie." Ce mémoire de Mesnet occupe les pages 147-173 de ce fascicule. Mesnet indique qu'il a eu "le bonheur de rencontrer plusieurs cas qui ont présenté toutes les métamorphoses connues de l'hystérie, accompagnées des phénomènes les plus remarquables de l'extase, de la catalepsie et du somnambulisme." Il rapporte une observation extrêmement détaillée d'une malade somnambule présentant "des troubles bien remarquables dans les fonctions de la sensibilité, de la locomotion et de l'entendement." Ernest Mesnet (1825-1898) exerça dans la maison de santé d'Archambault (son beau-père) puis fut nommé en 1859 médecin des Hôpitaux de Paris. Il sera en 1889 (comme Charcot) l'un des présidents d'honneur du premier Congrès international de l'hypnotisme.
